Follow-up Comment #21, bug #62552 (project octave):

Ok. Are all cases specific to command style calling? I would think any
function style call attempt of a variable would always be taken as a subsref
or subsasgn call and trigger errors of that variety.

Was just thinking of whether there would be a more instructive message but
wouldn’t want to suggest something that makes it incorrect for other uses.
