Marking this as targeted for current default (to be released as Octave 9).
@Reinhard, if you could, please prepare an updated patch against the current
dev sources (Octave 9.0.0). If it's too difficult, I can apply what you have
and see what doesn't apply.

There are several races in the code. This would be a good start to eliminating
them.
