Follow-up Comment #16:

This code was written a long time ago, and unfortunately who ever wrote it
didn't comment it.  Despite being short, it is very dense and difficult to
understand.  I thought I understood enough to make the first change, but I was
wrong.  I will take one more look, but otherwise I think we revert everything
and use Markus's change.
