                  Status:                   Fixed => Confirmed              
             Open/Closed:                  Closed => Open                   
         Planned Release:                    None => 9.1.0 (current default)

Follow-up Comment #21:

confirmed via a Mathworks bug report that the current matlab behavior is as
expected and they will look into clarifying the documentation to be more
explicit about the sorting.

so for compatibility it appears that octave should mimic the comment #17
output. 

as mentioned in comment #20, this should now be a rather straightforward fix.
recommend we make a patch for that change and include some ordering BISTs. 

reopening this report pending that change, and cc'ing the relevant people from
bug #63962.
