Dan,

how long does the GUI take longer to startup than the command line
octave on your system? On my system they both launch almost instantly. I
noticed there is a bug, so it is not the command line window that's
focussed at startup, but that can be corrected easily.

Jacob

It launches immediately.

Things stabilized after that first time I ran it; not sure what the issue was.

Looks pretty good Jacob. There are some quirky Qt window things with the desktop interaction. For example, the pin/enlarge middle window menu button doesn't really expand the full screen, just sort of toggles and changes the window a little. When the window isn't pinned, I can't seem to change the height of the window by dragging the top border. (The right/left border drags fine.) My desktop has a menu bar at the bottom that hides a portion of the IDE and because I can't change the height, that remains hidden. These sorts of things aren't an immediate concern.

Figuring out how to tabbify windows took a bit, but not too long. It would be nice to allow dragging tabs to arrange the order, if Qt has that. Otherwise, one has to release the window, then drag it back in the other window to tabbify it to change the order.

One thing that would be really nice (not saying there is urgency in addressing this) is to have a pop-up balloon when positioning the mouse over a variable in the Workspace window that shows the contents of the variable. Double click on variable brings up a variable editor. A separate organizing window that tabbifies all figures, organizes them side by side, etc. might be nice... I suppose there is always something new one can dream up.
