After pulling, my build still segfaults, but does not hang.

panic: Segmentation fault: 11 -- stopping myself...
attempting to save variables to 'octave-workspace'...
save to 'octave-workspace’ complete

After switching to stable, I get just about to the end before make fails.

  TEXI2DVI octave.dvi
/sw/bin/texi2dvi: etex exited with bad status, quitting.
Makefile:2150: recipe for target 'octave.dvi' failed
make[3]: *** [octave.dvi] Error 1
