In that thread, JWE was suggesting phasing out write support for everything
except Matlab's v7.3 format. I recall reading that v7.3 is less compact
than v7, because Matlab doesn't enable hdf5 compression. If that is the
case, there may be a case for being able to read and write compressed
versions of that too, or retaining an older format.
