I couldn't agree more with David's comments.

In our local Linux User Group, during 13+ years in which the mailing list was active this kind of topics were always coming and going, mostly started by new users which didn't know how to properly make use or exploit the convenience of a mailing list.

There is nothing more convenient to receive an email into your device/computer without having to explicitly going to browse for updates. If you are one of those users which don't know how to create mail filters or properly handle email subscriptions then that is your problem to solve.

Going back to our local linux group case, a web portal was created and merely newbies were floating around without any relevant question/answers since most of the older people stayed with the mailing list approach. Eventually it faded away and I was glad that we kept the mailing list alive.

Even though I'm not active on the list, as some other members have pointed out, most of the questions have been answered in the past, it's just a matter of searching the archive.

Instead of opting for a group on Google or Facebook I would recommend to replicate the content of the mail server or create backup mail/web servers, including a RR DNS setting.

I've been in the website/email/db hosting business since '95, so I volunteer to keep a mirror of the site and mailing list on my server of this approach is chosen.

What would become of the historical messages in the archive? I still search the
archives to find information I use from past topics.

Idea: a mongo (or ?) database to store and keep that contains all those past
topics and comments.

Anyone who has not searched the archives should. There are so many things
answered and discussed over and over again. New members should first search
before writing the list for this reason. Most newbies will fond their answers
there.

Now moving to a new way (Google) would to me seem to need to also bring along
that history in some form to avoid repeatedly answering already discussed
topics. Is there a way? Do I make sense?

Hi all,

the question of a forum came up again lately and since a pure forum already
failed in the past one proposition was to maybe move to google groups, which
more or less allows usage as either a normal mailing list (you DON'T need a
google account) or in a more forum like style via the web interface.

Maybe google groups is a bit more accessible for new users than the pure
mailing list we have now?
Also searching google groups for previous questions/posts/solutions is probably
nicer than searching the current paparazzi-devel archive.

So what are your thoughts on this? Would it make sense to move the mailing list
to google groups (or something else)? Or maybe use several lists, one for users
and one for development discussion?

Personally I'm fine with either keeping the current paparazzi-devel list or
moving to google groups.

Cheers, Felix
