You can launch the messages viewer from tools and check the ROTORCRAFT_STATUS message, there you can see the ap_motors_on state...

Also using AUTOPILOT_DISABLE_AHRS_KILL is only needed if you don't want to force KILL mode when the AHRS is aligning (initialization of attitude/bias).
This is a safety feature so you don't try to take-off before it is ready...
A few seconds after startup the AHRS should be aligned (AHRS_ALIGNER_LED should go from blinking to solid on).
