What environment did you use?
For msvc, uncomment this line in paraconfig_win32.h
//#define ENABLE_UNICODE
Otherwise, add --enable-unicode while running ./configure

However, tips above may be official advise. I personally don't think
ENABLE_UNICODE is working under MSVC in 1.0.8 or cvs 1.1-dev, so I
patched it myself. The key points of the patch can be found at the
forum which I posted as guest.
