1) I'm pretty sure Luca's new build system generates a single RPM for the
entire install (alien from the tarball), so in the future this shouldn't be an
issue.
2) I think RPM has a way of handling dependancies if you put all the rpms in a
directory and do an 'rpm -i *'. Take a look at the '--noorder' option. Just a
stab, I haven't used RPM in a while.
I agree that there is little benefit from using the RPMs over the tarball
unless the RPMs come with a distribution.
