You need imap support compiled into php in order to use imap.

Summary:  Error to access IMAP

Original Submission:  I have a FreeBSD with courier-imap and pop3, when I set 
to use pop3 with email program on phpgroupware I don´t have problems, but with 
IMAP I receive this message and the e-mails are show with a @ in From.
