SPSS 13 does not support value labels longer than 60 characters.  It
does support string variables much longer than 255 characters.  It does
NOT support variable labels longer than 255 characters.

SPSS 13 should support them, but that version is not shipped in Holland
yet....
We use pspp for webquestionnaires to generate systemfiles and it would
be usefull to have longer labels, but a lot of users don't have the
latest spss version (including myself). I don't think we are going to
use the long var/val labels the next 2 -3 year. But if it is a small
piece of work.....
