I'm checking this now. I have an old (pre-2.60) version of autoconf,
and make -f Smake is giving me trouble on this macro:

configure:42689: error: possibly undefined macro: AC_PROG_MKDIR_P

This is defined in  gl/m4/gnulib-common.m4 and should overcome
the problem of having an old version of autoconf. 

I'm upgrading my version of autoconf, but I thought I would mention
the problem with this macro.
