     The main issue I see after applying your patch is that changes to
     the dictionary are not reflected by the GUI datasheet until I do
     something that completely refreshes the view, such as checking or
     unchecking the Value Labels selection on the View menu. This is
     what happen if I, e.g., run COMPUTE newvar=someexistingvar. Is
     that the problem that you mention (same thing happens with NEW
     FILE), or is there something else you had in mind?

No. This is a different issue. Ignore the lack of refresh for now.
That's just a matter of callbacks (which will be a feature that
datasheet.c will need) to update the display when something changes.

A more serious problem that I've noticed, is that if I load a data
file, then do FILE NEW and try to enter new data, after a file I get

 src/data/case.c:325: case_data_rw_idx: Assertion `idx <
 c->case_data->value_cnt' failed.

I'm not sure why that is at the moment.
