I tried it again using the most recent configure.ac John
posted at his website (forgot the URL). That worked, but 
libpq tried to link to an old libssl.so that got replaced.
So I asked the admin to update libpq. I'll test it againg
when he does.

In the event the admin doesn't update libpq, John, would
you mind adding a --without-libpq?
