That is the way that I do my work.  It is a little easier if you configure with
"--enable-relocatable", because then you can temporarily install to any

When I am working on the GUI, I usually build with:
    make install DESTDIR=$PWD/inst
and then start PSPPIRE with "inst/usr/local/bin/psppire".

Maybe John has another way.
