That should be fine. When PSPP crashes, it's unlikely to be the user's fault.

I find the GUI to be difficult to debug and to have confidence in. It is not reliable enough, in my opinion, and I'm not quite sure what to do about that yet.

Ah, well, I'm not sure I'm doing this right.

I ran a means using another variable as the category (year) which is numerical. I think I got the syntax, but, well, now I can't get to it, because I copied the syntax, and tried to paste it into a new syntax box and got a pop up box saying i discovered a fatal error, please report it. But it froze my system, so i think i have to close everything and run it again.

Maybe I'm not supposed to copy syntax, then file / open new syntax and paste.

thanks

OK. This can be considered a bug in the GUI. I think that it should still work OK from syntax, although I haven't tried it.

Hi

Thanks for responding. Yes, "arearegion" is a text or string variable.

Thanks

It looks like that dialog only supports numeric variables currently (this seems to be too restrictive). Is your "arearegion" variable a string variable?

oops, yes, my mistake. I didn't want sum for this output, just frequencies. Sorry. The frequencies look right.

Next step, I wanted to get means. I mentioned before that when I follow
Analyze
Compare Means
Means

My categorical variable, that I want to group population means by, "arearegion", doesn't show up in the left side of the means dialog box.

I can get means if I follow
Analyze
Compare Means
One way anova
and click descriptives

But two of the groups, East Asia/Southeast Asia and South Asia, have very large populations, and when I download the results, the means are
East Asia/Southeast Asia20120000000
South Asia8230000000

Thanks

Hmm, this feature seems to work OK here. This syntax:

data list notable list /forename (A12) height.
begin data.
Ahmed 188
bertram 167
Catherine 134
David 109
end data.

FREQUENCIES
   /VARIABLES = height
/FORMAT=AVALUE TABLE
/STATISTICS=SUM.

yields this output:

   Statistics
╭─────────┬──────╮
│         │height│
├─────────┼──────┤
│N Valid  │     4│
│  Missing│     0│
├─────────┼──────┤

╰─────────┴──────╯

                             height
╭────────────┬─────────┬───────┬─────────────┬──────────────────╮

│Total       │        4│ 100.0%│             │                  │

which is what I'd expect.

I downloaded and installed 1.6 from here

I mentioned earlier that PSPP was not able to read my data set correctly
I'm happy to say that this version does read the data set. Thanks for the fix.

I ran a frequency (using the drop down menu, and the code appears in the output) but I'm puzzled by the output. I thought I asked for a sum

FREQUENCIES
/VARIABLES= AreaRegion
/FORMAT=AVALUE TABLE
/STATISTICS=SUM.

But I don't see a sum in the output box

Is there somewhere else I'm supposed to look?

Thanks

We don't have official binary releases, but the builds at that website are
ones that I consider to be trustworthy. You don't have to wait for permission
to use them.
