There are a lot of questions to be answered and I will address them all below. Thanks for the continued support.
I should state that while viewing images in the terminal would be super awesome, feh is lightweight enough to blast through the series of images I have in order to view them in X11. It's orders of magnitude faster than the Finder on my Mac and that's what I was hoping for.

This may not be clear enough. What I mean is that for a compilation
with X11 support, you need the "development files" of the
corresponding image library. W3mimg source code tries to include files
like Imlib.h and gdk-pixbuf-xlib/gdk-pixbuf-xlib.h.
