Freenode only allows clients using a very new authentication scheme
that's so far only officially supported in two clients to connect to
their Tor node, one of them proprietary (IIRC). It's possible to get
another client to work if you spend some time hacking with the python
script that implements it. It's also only possible to do this if you
connect at least once without Tor. For reference, the IRC client
installed by default on Trisquel and gNewSense is incompatible with
Freenode's Tor hookup.

As such, Freenode should be considered a network hostile to user's
privacy.
