        Technically speaking it means that they still live on the machine.
When a file is deleted from the CVS tree, it goes to an Attic directory
which is kind of a trash can. 

        The purpose of this directory is to be able to retrieve past versions
of a software. If version 0.4 had gifs and version 0.5 had no gif, if we
delete the gifs from the attic, there won't be any way to rebuild the 0.4
version if needs be. 

        In short, if we delete the gif files from the attic it will break
past versions of the software.
