You should try

rsync --rsh=ssh -Hav --delete --delete-excluded
--exclude=index.html

You can I remove files from the download area.
I tried:
"rsync --rsh=ssh -r --delete-exclude
--exclude="index.html"  
address@hidden:/upload/lafontaine/"

but i've got the next error message:
"unlink index.html : filesystem accessible in
read-only"
