Martin Furter <address@hidden> described the package as follows:
License: gpl
Other License:
Package: firewall ident daemon
System name: fidentd
Type: 2

Description:
fidentd is a
replacement for the ident daemon.
It\'s new feature is, that if it runs on a firewall with NAT it forwards ident
requests to the real clieant or it can generate an answer looking at the real
endpoints of the connection.

For example if you have a firewall and and behind the firewall more than one
user that want\\\'s to user IRC you need fidentd. The IRC server can then
lookup the usernames of users which is not possible with standard idet daemons.

Externally fidentd uses the ident protocol described in RFC-1413. But
internally it must use an enhanced version of this protocol because we now have
an fidentd in the middle (on the firewall) which creates a new request an sends
it to the real client. The real client must also have an identd running which
understands this enhanced protocol.
fidentd can also reply with a username depending on the clients IP address.

I allready have some code which is running on the firewall of a friend but it
just sends answers depending of the real clients IP address and it probably is
not as stable as it should be.
The existsing code can be found at the following URL:
http://mypage.bluewin.ch/a-z/tin/tools/fidentd.tgz

Other Software Required:
fidentd requires a linux kernel version 2.4.x
