If I remember well, there was an issue with binaries
distribution. Distros was unable to distribute mplayer because of
incompatible licenses mixed together.
I've just checked and found at

the following text:
MPlayer is GPL now. In the past it contained non-GPL code from
the OpenDivX project, which did not allow binary
redistribution. This has been removed.
