A faster and simpler solution might be a special string
compare function that does the opposite of what the standard
one does when one string is longer that the other but the
previous part was identical.

My previous post is in fact uncorrect.
You can easily sort numerically with perl, but it's slow, and it would
require to guess wich part of a package name should be sorted
numerically. Finally, it's would be very very slow: the cost is too
much, isn't it?
(And I do not even now if it's possible with PHP).
