Regarding the page statistics, it looks like SourceForge is
providing a logotype image on each page as a counter. The
image is returned by CGI script (or similar) that also
increases a project page counter.
A similar, but simpler, method can be used with Savannah.
You'll need a personal web site with good statistics and
they you simply include an image from that site on each
page. I.e. add an img tag with
src="http://yoursite/image.jpeg" in each HTML file.
I've used this technique with my own projects here
(Grammatica and Mibble) with good results. With the referrer
URLs you even get exact counts per web page.
Note: This does not solve the download statistics issue.
AFAIK that would require processing the access logs.

I also just wanted to insert a "me too".
My point of view is that the most important (for me) is a
'files download' statistics. I think it is a really good way
to estimate the number of 'users' of a project and so to
motivate the hackers team.
Others statistics (for HTML site visits) can be falsed:
visitors can have been redirected to my page because of a
wrong web search engine pattern.
But do not misunderstand: even without statistics, Savannah
is great.
