Andrew Suffield <address@hidden> described the package as follows:
License: gpl
Other License:
Package: lookupd
System name: lookupd
Type: non-GNU

Description:
lookupd is a daemon for proxying name service lookups on behalf of

applications. It is distinct from the conventional NSS system in that

it performs lookups in an independent long-running process, which

allows more flexibility.

lookupd is intended for scenarios where name lookups are performed

over the network (for example, in an LDAP directory). There is

presently little point in using it if all name lookups are performed

against local world-readable files, as is conventional on unix

systems.

For compatibility, an NSS module is provided which passes all queries

to lookupd, and lookupd itself can use other NSS modules to make

queries. By using both these features in combination, lookupd should

be a drop-in enhancement to any existing NSS system.

lookupd is maintained with tla. The current development branch is
address@hidden/lookupd--main--0.1. address@hidden is available at
http://people.debian.org/~asuffield/archives/gluck-2003/

Snapshots are occasionally made available at
http://people.debian.org/~asuffield/lookupd/snapshots/lookupd-0.1.0-20031116.tar.gz

Other Software Required:
lookupd is only for glibc-based systems
