luckily whats there is ok, but there have been many emails sent on that list 
which we do not wish to be revealed publically; such as dealing with who is 
going to email the flamewar-starters behind the scenes, talking about the 
quality of commits from new or prospective members... you know how it is

I think the existing archives were built when the mailing list was public. Once 
a message is posted to a public mailing list, it stays public, even if the list 
then switch to private archives - and vice-versa.
