The hacker would implemented this was willing to fight spammers and their
e-mail retreiving bots.
I personaly think this is going a bit too far, because it's now cumbersome to
contact the developer of a Savannah-hosted project.
One solution would be to show e-mails to anonymous visitors when they're not
marked as 'hidden'. Another solution would be to add another option to define
whether the e-mail can be show a) to anonymous visitors b) to logged-in
visitors c) to everybody, at the user option (I'd go for c)).
Is that what you have in mind?
