Follow-up Comment #1:

Hi,

>From the sysadmin point of view, software are referenced, automatically
tracked for (security) updates, and verified using a packaging system and a
common set of packages, in our case, Debian Lenny.

"What if you need a newer version of a package?"
In this case the way to go is to add another set of packages where somebody
is supposed to track security and issues; preferably a widespread, common
repository so that sysadmins get the same issues (and work on the same fixes).
In our case, there's backports.org:
http://backports.org/

Debian backports itself prepares more recent packages for the latest stable
Debian release, dealing with dependencies issues and the like. It also follows
Debian testing which (as the name implies) has some testing done and a 10 days
delay before validating new packages.

In our case, the latest package is bzr 1.13.1:
http://backports.org/debian/pool/main/b/bzr/
- I just upgraded.

So the best way to keep everybody happy is to make sure somebody takes care
of updating the backports.org bzr packages :)
Currently this looks fine, backports.org's founder Norbert took care of the
latest update:
