==== Description: ====
Topic: WP-MIRROR is a utility for building mirrors of Wikipedia. The
Wikimedia Foundation offers wikipedias in nearly 300 languages. For those who
wish to have off-line access to one or more wikipedias must currently use
KIWIX. KIWIX however provides only a selection of articles and image
thumbnails.
What is special about it: WP-MIRROR builds a complete mirror with full size
image files, and sets up a virtual host for local browsing. WP-MIRROR is
designed for robustness, and copes well with bad pages and bad images that
cause existing utilities to crash. WP-MIRROR displays progress using gui,
screen, or text. WP-MIRROR maintains state using InnoDB (the ACID compliant
transactional database storage engine for MySQL). Therefore multiple instances
of WP-MIRROR can run concurrently without error.
Purpose: 1) privacy (download the entire wiki so that ISP and governments do
not track browsing). 2) English as a Second Language (ESL). Those learning
ESL would benefit by having a mirror of simple-english side-by-side with their
own language. The Simple English wikipedia requires only 40G. 3) Mobility (one
can travel out of wireless range), and 4) Availability (ISP can go down during
exam season).
Programming language: most of the code is written in Common Lisp (clisp is a
dependency). Small amounts of code are written using BASH, MAKE, and PHP.
