It works here, I use gnome-python2-* rpms I made myself. They are
available here:

Don't mix gnome-python from source and gnome-python2-gconf from
rpm. The gnome-python-gconf module is included the gnome-python
tarball.

Red Hat ships a egenix-mx-base package, it's called mx. Use it.

In the url above there is also a straw rpm package, generated from a
setup.py Python script. (I will post a patch later.)

BTW: only gnome-2.2 is necessary to run straw?
It you want gnome-2.4 you should try Fedora Core 1:
