Thanks for your reply.

I tried adding PYTHONPATH to my .bashrc and surprisingly it actually 
causes more problems.  After I export PYTHONPATH, it complains about not 
being able to find a module named 'ui'.  Fortunately, by symlinking the 
modules (gconf, etc), I have it to a point where it is working 
acceptably without the PYTHONPATH variable.  I guess I'll just leave it 
at that.
