Hi,

I do not know if this helps or if this is related but I feel the need to mention it.
Feel free to dismiss.

for any java related stuff, I spawn a xephyr session and run the application through it (example application: yed, intellij-idea, basic clojure app with rendering in awt, swing, etc...).

This may be considered tedious but using anything else but stumpwm would be far more tedious for me.

The only java app that I used to use which ran without problem in stumpwm was eclipse (at least version 3.4 through 3.7 and surely before the 4.* version).

To lessen the problem, I stumbled upon this http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Problems_with_Java and tried it out.

# fix awt & co. in stumpwm/xmonad
export _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1

this helped in some rendering issue regarding java application.

I'll have to read up on the floating groups.  Thanks for the pointers.
Hopefully there is a way to specify what windows can be in floating groups.
