Google Summer of Code 2011 has been announced! They are now accepting
applications for mentoring organizations.

As in past years, GNU is participating as an umbrella organization for
all GNU packages. Some larger GNU packages choose to apply separately,
though.

This year, I will be acting as the organization administrator for GNU.

The organization application deadline is *March 11, 2011 at 23:00 UTC*
(~ one week from now).

Please take a look at the Timeline [0] for more information on deadlines.

All GNU packages interested in participating must provide a list of
ideas for student projects before *March 10, 2011 at 23:00 UTC*.

That doesn't strictly mean that a package can't join the list after that
deadline, but we do need a good ideas list in order to be approved as a
mentoring organization in the first place.

I've setup a wiki page[1] on LibrePlanet for the sake of organization.
Please check this page for useful information and other packages' ideas.

To provide your ideas list:
1. edit the wiki[1] as instructed there AND
2. send an e-mail to address@hidden notifying us about your
submission

Any further questions should be directed to the address@hidden
mailing list. Please join the list if you are interested in
participating either as a mentor or as a student.

This message is directed to GNU package maintainers and developers
willing to provide ideas and mentor students. Information specific to
students will be provided in the near future.

About Google Summer of Code (from http://google-melange.com)

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global program that offers student
developers stipends to write code for various open source software
projects. We have worked with several open source, free software, and
technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a
three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought
together over 4,500 students and more than more than 4,000 mentors &
co-mentors from over 85 countries worldwide, all for the love of code.
Through Google Summer of Code, accepted student applicants are paired
with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining
exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the
opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits.
In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and
bring in new developers. Best of all, more source code is created and
released for the use and benefit of all.
