I use the following script for that:
./configure --enable-optimizations
sed -i "s/L=gcc/L=gcc -static/g" Makefile.common
sed -i "s/L=g++/L=g++ -static/g" Makefile.common
sed -i "s/-lz//g" Makefile.common
sed -i "s/-lfontconfig/-lfontconfig -lxml2 -lpthread/g" Makefile.common
sed -i "s/-lfreetype/-lfreetype -lz/g" Makefile.common
make -j2
