Do you have all the correct XPDF font's installed?   Do check.   If in doubt,
install them.  They're available from here,

   ftp://ftp.foolabs.com/pub/xpdf/

Also, if you do the conversion with the verbose flags, say -vv or -vvv, it may
actually give you a clue as to why the characters are missing.

Finally, just for fun, create a SWF font, and then display it.  Just to see what
happens.
