[Synaptic-devel] "Apply" not committing changes

I have the latest version available through the freshrpms family of repos, 
0.53.3. It is downloading files as the first part of a "smart upgrade", but then 
quits before the changes are committed. I also notice that the progress bar is 
missing from the bottom of the window where it would indicate such commitment. I 
have to revert to apt-get dist-upgrade in the xterm to get it to complete. The 
following is my apt-get session:
