I wrote some proof of concept code and put a screenshot online at: http://people.debian.org/~mvo/synaptic/synaptic-pkglist-outdated.png Do you (and the list) think this is clear? Or should be change the text/wording? Is it clear what happens when "Remember the answer" isselected?
"Package list outdated" -> "Package list out of date" "was not updated" -> "has not been updated" "on a regular interval" -> "on a regular basis" or even "regularly"Since the reload will take some time I don't think it should ever be done without a prompt. However a "warn me next time" check box some might like (although changing the days in the preferences to "0" could be used instead).
Perhaps automatically fetching the first stage (with a CANCEL button), then proceeding to your "Package list outdated" dialog if indeed it is.The package list update seems to be in two stages, the first quicker than the second. Is it possible to do just the first part quickly so as to be able to respond with a "new updates available"?The problem is here, that all we know after the first stage is that there is a updated package list available. We do not know yet if any of the changes apply to one of the packages that are installed. So I'ma bit unsure about it.
For myself I'm not too concerned about whether the new information will suggest that I should update some packages. Sometimes I just want to see if a package is available and which version.
Synaptic is getting better all the time! Chris
