Same problem here, version 0.53 on SuSE 9.1 from
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.1-i386/RPMS.suser-rbos/synaptic-0.53-0.suse091.rb.1.i586.rpm
