I see was confusing literal typeset brace characters with interpreted
"special" brace characters.  Sorry.

    @inlineraw{tex, $--{x^i}\over{\tan y}$} 
    matching braces should be accepted in my opinion.
    So, I'll make all matching braces be accepted (in all the formats).
