This approach does not take into account manpages.  In its current
state info treats manpages the same as info documents.  This, in
particular, makes it a better replacement for good ol' man, because info
is able to follow cross-references in manual pages exactly as it does in
info documents.  Moreover, info documents can contain cross-references
to manpages, for example (texinfo source):

  @ref{fnmatch,, match filename or pathname,fnmatch(3), fnmatch(3) man page}.

Following such a reference in info viewer brings in the manual page in
question.

Obviously the proposed approach will lose all these features.
