It seems that the package can be reverted to a 'free' state by simply
renaming the problematic files. That would require changing the file
name references, and maybe adding a conversion filter to handle user
document which would use to the non-free names... Nothing very
difficult.

By the way. How much is TeXmacs intrisically dependent on METAFONT and
friends? Maybe the internal changes required to support PDF (in some
indeterminate future) may allow to use the system's Type1 rasterizer
instead of METAFONT? Is there some font information (metrics?) which
cannot be conveyed by Type1 fonts and thus make METAFONT an essential
requirement?
