It was easy to explain, but having this experience, I can say that the
folks writing the tutorial and beginner documentation should keep in
mind that many folks out there have never used anything but a
conventional word processor or text editor, and have no exposure to
LaTeX or TeX typesetting. Square one.

Thanks, we'll keep that in mind ;^)

One thing I did once that could help is having an :
[[
  <assign|mode|math>
]]

in the preamble, or in a stylesheet. This way, your new
TeXmacs document becomes defaulted to math mode, this
can be simpler for beginners (it avoids the need to
raise too much questions in the 1st place).
