I actually meant the shrinking factor.

I now normalize the zoom factor using the routine 'normal_zoom'
in renderer.cpp.  This seems to remove all artefacts, also under Qt.
Of course, this is really a very dirty hack, but it seems to work.
Some more serious rethinking of this stuff is still necessary, I believe.
