It struck me while driving and doing errands this afternoon that you and
Christoph are correct and that all that should be needed is to enclose
the expression in square brackets to quell the warning.

I see now (without testing it so far) that modifying the subscript will
have the same effect as using the precision notation.  It's probably
just semantics, but it took me a while to see it!
