And yet again... But with good news this time. I got it working with
a very minor change to my Perl authenticator. I did have to check the
C code in pop.c to find the change from the name being sent as
'address@hidden' to being sent as two separate keys in the hash, 'name'
and 'domain'.

BTW, now that I'm fairly sure my Perl authenticator isn't causing my
memory leak, after some more testing I'll be happy to send it in.
