I used to have this problem long ago when I was delivering mail to mboxes.
I did not stop to think about configuring with --disable-dotfile-lock. maybe
I could have tried that! The mail was delivered to /var/mail/$(user) for
system accounts and /var/spool/virtual/$(domains)/$(user) and the permissions
on the /var/mail was 1777. I don't remember what it was on 
/var/spool/virtual/$(domain)
since this was owned by the MTA user only.

Now I use Maildir delivery but I am still curious to know if there would be no
consequence for the mboxes if you compile with --disable-dotfile-lock.
