Another quick thought...

could this be a permissions problem?

The file is in the /var/mail directory (default permissions -- never been
touched)
the file is chmod 600 owned by mailnull | mail.

Could this be the problem?

The log files show

you've got it in one! What's in the system log, though?
Make sure you use the -v option, so that you get more
detailed error reporting.
