We've got about 300 users with a period in their local_part (15 of those have 
2 periods) and have had no complaints from any of them.  We're running tpop3d 
1.5.3 on both RH9 and FC2 boxes using auth_mysql, TLS, and mass virtual 
hosting.  Sounds like a misconfig on your part, but without more information 
it is near impossible to help.

Can you run the tpop3d server in debug mode and watch the output when a user 
with a period tries to login?  What is returned when you run the MySQL query 
by hand?
